The Storytellers' Code

We have fun with stories

Story adventurers love to spark their imaginations through playing games, acting and taking part in storytelling circles.

We know there isn't one right answer

Story adventurers celebrate all the ways to make and tell a story — words, pictures, actions — we get to choose!

Stories are for sharing

What's more fun than enjoying a story? Enjoying a story and talking to other people about it of course! Story adventurers have lots of time to share and celebrate each others' stories.

The story behind Story Club

I'm Lily, parent, trained teacher and enjoyment in reading and writing specialist.

Story Club has grown out of my experiences during 6 years as a trained English teacher and 10 years designing, delivering and evaluating reading and writing programmes.

I didn't set out to found anything, but I couldn't shake these three thoughts:

  1. Let's make more space for fun with words. Children benefit from enjoying books and stories but we all feel the pressure of What Good Looks Like.
  2. Let's give young readers choices to understand what kind of reading they enjoy. There is excellent evidence for what encourages enjoyment in reading and writing and we are living in a golden age of children's books! Yet, reading enjoyment in the UK is at an all time low.
  3. Let's share ideas. Families worry about reading from a very young age — how can we harness that interest without creating more pressure?

The story of the first adventure

One sunny half term break, an intrepid crew of story adventurers survived a shipwreck! After many games, treasure maps and speech bubbles here's a snippet of the story they built.

We set out to space, via Australia, in a boat that had massive propellors like a helicopter. However, not everything went to plan...

We made it through a terrifying storm to see some strange animals on a passing island. They were long like snakes, but furry with 10,000 tiny wings all over their body and two different size antennaes for eyes. There were some mean ones — they want to eat you! But there were also nice ones. Nola kept a cute one as a pet. It was very cute, but it did get feathers all over the ship...

Sailor Susie and Captain Lily had a nap while Imogen kept watch and everyone else scrubbed the deck. Unfortunately while we were sleeping there was a tidal wave! Everyone was thrown from the ship, except Oscar because he's an octopus so he used his suckers to stick onto the boat.

Every sailor made their way to the island solo. Even Cordy who got sucked into a whirlpool on the way! Each sailor had their own adventure on the island. Ayla was heard shouting "stop that's my treasure", Pandora blasted into space and Cassidy had to trek up a cliff only to find chicken nuggets!

When we all made it back to the ship we had treasure and stories to share. We can't wait for our next adventure...

"She told us all about the story that everyone created with a huge smile on her face and she said she wants to go to another workshop."

"She loved calling you Captain Lily!"
